Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking)

Fracking with PolyPAM

Our PolyPAM formulations function as highly effective fracking chemicals especially in high salinity water.  PolyPAM formulations are excellent friction-reducers, with quick dissolution properties improving fluid handling efficiency. These formulations maintain shear-thinning properties, ensuring smooth pumping operations, while sustaining viscosity in low shear and high salinity conditions. As fracking operations move to using increasingly high salinity water and with less access to fresh water, PolyPAM formulations have proven to hold their properties in such harsh conditions and be the optimum choice for such applications.

Friction reduction results using 1/2" pipe diameter CHANDLER Flow Loop.

PolyPAM UHMWPAM formulations achieved exceptional friction reduction of over 70% in a high brine solutions of 225k TDS, using very dilute loading of 0.1 kg/m3. These formulations also achieved excellent dissolution properties, reaching full solubility within a minute.

Comparison of viscosity profiles in a 200k TDS salt solution

PolyPAM’s UHMW formulation maintains high viscosity in high salinity environments. This property is critical for viscosifying applications, and especially in Hydraulic Fracturing applications where the polymer must act as a Friction Reducer as well as a good viscosifier.

Frequently asked questions

1. What makes Polyacrylamide suitable for high-salinity and high temperature polymer flooding operations?

Polyacrylamide is water soluble and can be engineered with chemistries that are resistant to degradation in high temperature or high salinity.

2. How does Polyacrylamide improve operational efficiency in Hydraulic Fracturing applications

By reducing friction and maintaining fluid stability in high-salinity conditions, Polyacrylamide helps lower injection pressures, maintain access to pore network, increase oil recovery rates, and minimize downtime, resulting in smoother and more cost-effective operations.
